A comparison of psychophysical and VECP increment threshold functions of a rod
نویسنده
چکیده
Increment thresholds of a rod monochromat were obtained over a wide range of background luminances. Within each experimental session, visualevoked cortical potentials (VECP's) were computed at several luminance levels above the increment threshold for each background level. The results indicate that as the background level approached 1,000 scotopic trolands (td.), the VECP began to decrease in amplitude and it was unrecordable above 2,000 scotopic td. The VECP increment threshold function was determined with latency used as the criterion response. Good agreement was found between the psychophysical and VECP functions, although the VECP function did show a tendency to underestimate the threshold at the two dimmest background levels. It is concluded that the dramatic drop in the VECP amplitude at high background luminances is a reflection of the saturation of the rod system and that the VECP appears to be a sensitive correlate of the psychophysical data.

Desensitization of skate photoreceptors by bleaching and background light
Through extracellular measurements of photoreceptor responses to flashed stimuli, we examined how the bleaching of rhodopsin affects increment receptor threshold in the isolated retina of the skate (Raja oscellata and R. erinacea). Both initially unbleached and previously bleached photoreceptors, when exposed to full-field luminous backgrounds of fixed intensity, attain approximately stable lev...
متن کاملHuman scotopic dark adaptation: Comparison of recoveries of psychophysical threshold and ERG b-wave sensitivity.
We have compared the time course of dark adaptation of the human scotopic visual system, measured psychophysically and from the b-wave of the electroretinogram (ERG), for bleaches ranging from a few percent to near total. We also measured light adaptation, in order to apply a "Crawford transformation" to convert the raw measurements of dark adaptation into equivalent background intensities. For...
متن کاملIncrement threshold and detection latency in the rod and cone systems.
It was reported previously that increment-threshold functions obtained in the dark-adapted rod and cone systems have two distinct branches, and that these functions are predicted by a simple model similar to those developed to describe vertebrate reaptor responses. The model also makes several unusual predictions concerning the latency for detection of the increment field at threshold. These pr...

1. The rod-isolation technique of Aguilar & Stiles (1954) was used to obtain scotopic increment-threshold functions in the dark-adapted eye. Increment-threshold functions were obtained for background durations of 50 to 500 msec, but the onset of the background and increment fields was always simultaneous. In all conditions the duration of the increment field was 50 msec. 2. The pattern of resul...
متن کاملLinking impulse response functions to reaction time: Rod and cone reaction time data and a computational model
Reaction times for incremental and decremental stimuli were measured at five suprathreshold contrasts for six retinal illuminance levels where rods alone (0.002-0.2 Trolands), rods and cones (2-20 Trolands) or cones alone (200 Trolands) mediated detection. A 4-primary photostimulator allowed independent control of rod or cone excitations. This is the first report of reaction times to isolated r...
